As part of our research, we had the privilege of creating short films with whānau who participated in He Ture Kia Tika. These included stories of the journey of community and iwi-based organisations that weave their magic to uplift their people. One such organisation serving tāngata in the courts and prison in Te Tai Tokerau is Te Mana o Ngāpuhi Kōwhao Rau. Discover the essence of their unique work in this brief video and the accompanying in-depth story below.

What’s happened to Te Mana since this storytelling?

Te Mana continues to focus its work on the Matariki Court, a solutions-focused court for adult Māori in Kaikohe; the Northern Regions Correction Facility at Ngāwhā; and their community-based in Moerewa. They are now an integral part of the mainstream court Te Ao Marama transformations in the Kaikohe District Court.

The inspiration and development of this community-based initiative have rested with Ngahau and Debbie Davis, who will transition to kaumatua and kuia of the organisation.  A new phase will emerge with Tina Mahanga as the kaihautū o te waka.
